Understanding Androgynous & Unisex Fashion

These are two terms that have shaken up the newly regenerated fashion lingo in an industry that is ever evolving. It does take a lot of effort for the budding designers to make their consumers understand the difference between both. These both are styles that don’t always work in all countries. The traditional countries might take time to settle, understand and actually start donning androgynous clothing or get used to wearing unisex clothing with no prejudices whatsoever.

So, what do the terms ‘Androgynous’ and ‘Unisex’ really mean?

Androgynous Fashion: Garments that reflect aesthetics that both men and women can wear with ease have termed to be as ‘Androgynous Clothing’. The look for men might end up looking feminine but they do suit them well. Same goes for the women. They can wear masculine silhouettes and experiment openly with over-sized jackets, coats and even formal pants. It is one of the most flexible yet prejudiced forms of fashion in some countries. Everyone is sadly not appreciated for the part manly, part womanly look unless pulled off with certain ease and comfort you seek from your personal style. Simple elements like accessories worn by women like bow ties, earrings, scarves and stocking were worn by men. Women could pull off a killer look with well tailored pants and loose or a well fitted shirt/jerkin or a jacket. Ties and belts were used by women as accessories to complete the entire androgynous look.

Unisex/Gender Fluid Fashion: Gender Fluidity in Fashion is a different ball game altogether. The boom started in the late 20’s although it existed from the 90’s. These garments are for both the sexes and can be worn by both the sexes easily at a blink of an eye. The beauty of this style is that it lets you be who you are what you feel and enables you to wear any garment, not restricting it to any sexes. It just easily fits in and looks good on both the genders. Gender Fluid clothes make all the difference. People don’t need to stick to the fact of it looking a certain way as the beauty of this look is that it fits and gives you a good look just like it does for your guy friend.

Gender Fluidity has gone through its rough patches but is being slowly embraced by the fashion world with open arms. -Srishti Hemmady
